At the heart of Staiy is our value of sustainability. We want to make sure that we curate the top sustainable brands to offer to our customers, which is why we developed a rigorous process for selecting brands that work with us. We know that shopping sustainably can be challenging, that is why Staiy aims to make the experience easier for the user by providing one place where you can trust to find eco-conscious products from brands that are worth supporting. If you are curious about looking behind the curtain, keep reading to find out how our selection process works. 

All potential brands are tested using our Staiy Sustainability Evaluation. We created this evaluation to help us weed out the green from the greenwashed throughout our selection process. We start with sharing our evaluation with the brand and asking them to provide us with information regarding their practices. We then examine their answers and score them based on their ecological footprint and our 5 Pillars of Sustainability. Currently, the evaluation consists of 124 questions. Only brands that successfully meet our standards become a part of Staiy.

The Staiy Sustainability Evaluation (SSE) is structured around our 5 Pillars of Sustainability. These Pillars are: 

Water

We examine the water usage throughout all levels of the supply chain. 

11.3% of the SSE is focused around this Pillar.

Example question: During the creation and manufacturing of your products, what proportion of your total water usage do you reuse and/or recycle? 

Air:

We examine how gas emissions are tackled and how the carbon footprint is lowered

16.9% of the SSE is focused around this Pillar 

Example question: What is the proportion of renewable energy sources that you use during the creation and manufacturing of your product?

Materials

We examine sustainable production processes, waste reduction systems and the use of innovative materials. 

31.5% of the SSE is focused around this Pillar

Example question: In your design and manufacturing phase, do you have procedures to minimise material waste? 

Working conditions

As we believe in intersectional environmentalism, we also examine how the workers are treated to make sure that they are receiving their fundamental rights, and are being protected and treated with respect.

14.5% of the SSE is focused around this Pillar.

Example question: Do you have a strategy or statement outlining your commitment to respect human rights, the effective abolition of child labor, the zero tolerance towards gender-based violence and harassment conveyed to the relevant stakeholders?

Supply Chain

We examine the relationships with the suppliers and the traceability of the resources needed.

25.8% of the SSE is focused around this Pillar.

Example question: Have you applied a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) or a similar assessment to your supply chain?

Based on the results of the SSE, the brand in question will receive 5 ratings; one for each Pillar. Our rating system is fairly simple:

1 impact point: ON THE RIGHT PATH

2 impact points: GOOD

3 impact points: GREAT

4 impact points: SUPERB

5 impact points: EXCELLENT

Staiy relies on a brand’s transparency when answering the SSE; however, we encourage brands to conduct other evaluations to corroborate their responses and ask them to share their certifications with us. Internationally recognised certifications can tell us a lot about a brand and how trustworthy it is, which helps us greatly in our selection process. Some of these certifications include the Fair Wear Foundation, BLUESIGN, and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

To conclude, we do our best to make sure that the brands we select are sustainable and ethical, aligning with our principles. The SSE is an invaluable asset in this process and we are likewise thrilled when a potential partner brand has internationally recognised certifications as well.
