Made in Italy Knitwear

Mother-daughter power duo Marina Suraci and Georgia Calvo decided at the beginning of 2020 to launch an e-commerce of knitwear made with eco-sustainable and recycled yarns.
A year later,
Marigré continues to grow, and Staiy is thrilled to welcome yet another wonderful Made in Italy brand to our community.

According to the founders, to help our planet it is necessary to start behaving ethically when it comes to buying clothes, choosing quality and longevity of the garments over fast fashion.
In fact, the search for
organic and biodegradable yarns is at the heart of the brand.
Marigré’s yarns are certified and traceable, while the collections are
Made in Italy, both in terms of design and production.
“The knitwear factories are absolutely prestigious and highly experienced, having always worked with Italian and foreign brands”, they tell us.

Although from different professional backgrounds, and belonging to different generations, Marina and Georgia have always shared travels together, as well as the love for the arts and fashion, thus developing a similar taste for beauty, harmony and the unusual.
Their intent is “to keep up with the times by offering an ethical product, never extreme but elegantly transversal”.

Marina’s parents had a knitwear factory from the 60s to the 80s, called Maglificio Piemontese, which was one of the first to export Italian knits to the USA. She started working in the company after her studies, dealing with designs and collections, until she decided to work with other fashion brands. Lately, after several experiences with great stylists, she felt the need to create and share a business with her daughter Georgia.

Initially, the idea of starting a new brand represented a great challenge: the goal was to offer a modern and high quality product, both in terms of packaging and material, demonstrating that it is possible to follow ethical and eco-friendly standards at a fair price. “The limits were many, both in the choice of materials and the colours available, but the offer has gradually increased, as has the general sensitivity and attention”.

Take care of our planet

The beginning of March 2020 saw another challenge for the brand.
It was the period in which Marigré was expected to enter the market, but also when the world entered the first lockdown for Covid-19. Marina and Georgia decided to bet everything on their brand and launch the e-commerce platform despite the situation.
As we can see today, their cool head and hard work definitely paid off.

When asked what sustainability means to them, the founders reply that “it is absolutely crucial, with the contribution of each of us, to improve the environment in which we live starting from our daily life; it is not enough to buy less, but also to change our habits.
We must try to think about every action we do – picking zero kilometre products to avoid polluting, saving fuel and electricity, saving water, not clearing land for unnecessary construction, avoiding driving the car for small trips around the city etc.
It is our duty as humans to take responsibility and focus on what’s good of our planet, even if we are already very late”.

Stop Fast Fashion

Undoubtedly, in recent times, the fashion industry has flooded us with collections that are increasingly closer together; continuous proposals have led to compulsive shopping, both in boutiques and online. “It is time to review the entire fashion supply chain, to drastically reduce the collections, offering a more sustainable, quality and longer lasting product for a smarter purchase. Stop fast fashion and stop the tons of discarded clothes that must be disposed of every year”. According to the mother-daughter duo, today the real modern luxury is represented by the quality product, with organic and certified yarns. The search for materials, attention to detail, care in packaging must be a priority in addition to respect for workers and the environment.

Dare to success

Finally, we ask Marigré founders what advice they would give to young people looking to make a difference in the fashion world. Marina and Georgia advise them to “dare, dare, and dare” after weighing very well the pros and cons, the degree of commitment and dedication to the project, the awareness that there could be dark and difficult moments, but also the awareness that it will be all worth in the end.
