Stella McCartney launched her brand 20 years ago. As soon as the brand was launched, it was known as the first luxury brand to never use leather, fur, feather or skins. The brand has committed to never compromise on desirability or sustainability. The brand strikes to be innovative to come up with many different ways to make luxury fashion while being sustainable.
For Stella McCartney’s Spring 2022 collection, the brand collaborated with Bolt Threads. Bolt Threads is a material startup brand that recently introduced Mylo as a vegan replication of leather. Indeed, this is not the leather that first comes to our mind. This leather is made from mycelium, the roots of mushrooms.
Bolt Threads collaborated with Ecovative which is a New York based startup. Ecovative initially came up with this idea of using mushroom roots for packaging. Bolt Threads used this idea to develop patented leather with the growing techniques they used, turning the cells into an animal leather looking material. This material can be produced only after a few days.
