Tips for a planet-friendly beauty routine

Sustainable consumption practices are becoming more and more crucial in our fight against climate change. We know our eating habits and shopping habits have a strong impact on our planet, and this awareness influences us to eat and shop more consciously.

But what about our beauty routines? We often forget that cosmetics and skincare products can have negative impacts too! From the chemical formulation, through the production process, the packaging, the shipping, to distribution and recycling, beauty products definitely harm the environment, especially our oceans.

Luckily, there are several ways to make our beauty routines sustainable. Here is Staiy’s selection of the most insightful ones!

Save plastic in the shower

The main problem with our shower products lies in the packaging. Incorrectly disposed plastic containers cannot be recycled and become damaging polluting agents. Washing them properly is a first small yet beneficial step in the recycling process. But we can do much more.

For instance, we can turn to soap and shampoo bars: they need no plastic packaging, which makes a huge difference.Take a look at our brand Shaeco (link), their soaps are plastic-free and the water usage through the production process is kept at low levels.

Planet-friendly Skin Care

Firstly, when it comes to skincare, keep in mind that less is more. After all, you don’t need tons of products: a good cleanser, toner and moisturiser alone can constitute a wonderful beauty routine. Plus, it is a money and time saver. However, do not exaggerate with the amount of product used!

Secondly, let’s pay attention to the chemical formulation of the products. To be more eco-friendly, our products should avoid petroleum derivatives and microplastics. For instance, our brand Mademoiselle Kelapa (link) uses only natural and organic ingredients to produce items that can be truly all-natural and eco-friendly.

Look out for marine extracts and algae: these ingredients, while growing, turn carbon dioxide into oxygen, which actively reduces the level of CO2.

Make up: remove it wisely

When it comes to make up, let’s be mindful of materials. Disposable remover pads and applicators are daily waste. Let’s switch to reusable, washable pads and look out for brushes and applicators made of recycled or sustainable materials.

Let’s also not forget to look out for cruelty-free and eco-friendly products: more and more companies are becoming very transparent in this regard and disclose several information about their production processes.

Last but not least

Turning to a sustainable beauty routine is not as hard as you might think, you just need to get started: for example, you can think about your next sustainable purchase only when you see that your products are about to finish.

All you need to do in the end is pay attention to recycling, avoid single-use items and look for brands that follow environmentally and socially sustainable practices. Production is not only about resource consumption, it is also about ethical working conditions. For instance, our brand Studio Jux (link) is committed to maximizing its socioeconomic impact and to achieving a more ethical production and consumption process, by granting safe and sustainable working conditions in their factories.

Last but not least, if you don’t know where to start, here’s an easy tip: when buying your next toothbrush, ditch plastic and go for bamboo!
